In some scenarios, it is necessary to reinstall your server's operating system while retaining the same IP address. Whether due to an incorrect initial configuration or needing to give a different approach to the configuration we had in mind. There may also be cases where we want to completely change the operating system because we either made a mistake or want to try another Clouding image while keeping the IP.
How the reinstallation process works
When reinstalling a server with another operating system, what happens internally is that a new server is created and the old server is deleted with the following peculiarities to keep in mind:
- If the server has snapshots created, they will be unlinked during the operating system reinstallation and will be available in the My Snapshots section.
- If the server has backups created, they will be retained for 7 days and then deleted.
- The server's statistics graphs will be reset.
- The server will retain the IP, VPC configuration, and Firewall profiles.
Reinstall your server's operating system
To reinstall the operating system, you will need to go to your server list and click on the three-dot icon to display the menu with the Reinstall option. You can also click on the server name and click on the Reinstall option that appears in the Server Actions column:
Warning
Please note that by performing this procedure, all current data on your server will be permanently deleted and the operating system will be reinstalled from scratch. Make sure to back up any important information before proceeding.
When you click on the Reinstall option, a new server creation page will load where you can make the following changes:

Information
After the server reinstallation, you can modify the Firewall profiles associated with the Public IP and the server's Private Networks.
Once you have selected the new information for the server reinstallation, you can click on the Submit button to proceed with the server reinstallation.
As you can see in the image above, the original server with Ubuntu 24.04 is being deleted while the reinstalled server with Debian 12 is being scheduled for creation under the same IP.
