CHKDSK (Check Disk) is a disk diagnostic and repair tool included in all Windows operating systems. Its main function is to check the integrity of the file system and hard drive, and repair errors that may affect system stability or data access.
To run CHKDSK, follow these steps:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Type the following command:
chkdsk C: /f /r /x
- /f → Fixes errors on the disk.
- /r → Locates bad sectors and recovers readable data.
- /x → Dismounts the drive before checking.
Repairing the system drive (C:)
Since the C: drive is in use by Windows, you will be prompted to schedule the check for the next restart:
Do you want to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y and restart your PC so that CHKDSK can automatically fix any errors.
Tip: You can force Windows to check the C: drive on the next restart with the command:
chkntfs /C C:
Important Considerations
- The process may take several minutes or longer, depending on the size of the disk/volume and the number of errors.
- During the check, access to Windows will be limited, so save your work before restarting.
- CHKDSK cannot repair disks with physical failures; in such cases, consider replacing the disk.
