There are many possible backup configurations to protect our data from any type of attack or human error (especially the latter). Some people make a copy every two days, others every day, and others every 4 days. That is why, for some time now, at Clouding.io we have offered a very useful feature that lets you configure a server backup in 5 minutes. You can also use our control panel to Manage backups easily.
However, these backups, which cover the entire server, are sometimes not enough. You may therefore need to configure additional backups within the server to save your web applications or other services separately. If you have a server administration panel such as Plesk or VestaCP, you can configure website backups so that you can restore a specific website instead of the entire server.
In this article, we will explain how to make backups using VestaCP, which, despite being a simple control panel, offers some very useful configuration options.
Configuring the number of backups to keep
To configure the number of backups, we need to change this setting in the plans. First, however, we need to check which plan is assigned to our user, so click Usuario:
As shown in the image, our plan is default, so go to Planes in the main menu at the very top and then edit the plan. In the plan editor, find the Respaldos parameter and enter the number of backups you want to keep.
Keep in mind that these backups are saved by default in /backups and that making many backups of all your websites will use up disk space. You therefore need to consider how much disk space is available for the backup.
Exclusions
In the Respaldo section, you will see an option called Exclusiones. This option lets you exclude certain content from the daily backup. For example, you can exclude a website, an email account, a database, etc.
To do this, simply enter the name of the service to exclude:
Restoring a backup
VestaCP lets you restore individual services. For example, you can restore a specific user's email. You do not need to restore the entire website; you can restore individual items.
In the Respaldo options, hover over a backup to select Configurar las opciones de restauración and specify what you want to restore:
This option loads a list of the backup's contents, allowing you to restore whatever you need:
