Hotmail is a free email service. This service has been on the web for many years, ever since Sabeer Bhatia came up with this ingenious idea of bringing us together, no matter where in the world we are, needing only an Internet connection to send and receive messages from any geographical location. Hotmail grew tremendously starting in 1996.
Hotmail was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, launching on July 4, 1996. It was one of the first free webmail services.
They considered several possibilities for a name ending in “-mail”. Its original name was written HoTMaiL to highlight the letters HTML. By December 1997, it had 8,5 million subscribers; that same month, it was acquired by Microsoft for around 400 million dollars. Microsoft bundled Hotmail with other MSN services. By February 1999, it had 30 million active subscribers. In December 1999, Microsoft forgot to pay the 35 dollars for the domain.
For several years, the service did not change much due to limited competition. In 2004, Google launched Gmail, with previously unseen services and features, especially its large storage capacity and speed. Yahoo! Mail immediately responded with similar features, while Hotmail took a little longer.
The new Hotmail system, code-named Kahuna, is announced on November 1, 2005. The project was based on three premises: faster, simpler, and more secure. By the end of 2006, the system had millions of beta testers.
The new system is announced under the name Windows Live Mail, which is immediately changed to Windows Live Hotmail because the name caused confusion. The beta period ended in April 2007.
The launch of Windows Live Hotmail takes place in May 2007 for new subscribers, and the 260 million MSN Hotmail accounts begin switching to the new system.
Windows Live Hotmail is improved again in terms of speed and storage, and new features are added in 2008.
It is renamed, its style and functionality change, and it integrates better with the Windows system. It is now called Outlook.com.
