Yahoo! is a global media company based in the United States that owns an Internet portal, a web directory, and a range of services such as the popular Yahoo! email service. Its purpose is “to be the most essential global Internet service for consumers and businesses”. It was founded in January 1994 by two Stanford University graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yahoo! was incorporated on March 2, 1995, and began trading on the stock market on April 12, 1996. The company has its corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, United States. The purchase of Yahoo by Verizon was announced on July 25, 2016.
On July 29, 2009, it was announced that in 10 years, Microsoft Corporation would have full access to the Yahoo! search engine for use in future projects intended for its Bing search engine.
Yahoo! was initially named “Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web“.(Jerry's guide to the World Wide Web), but its name was soon changed to Yahoo! There are several versions of the origin of the name Yahoo!: the real version circulating at Yahoo! corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California is that it comes from the name of some characters in Jonathan Swift's book Gulliver's Travels, the Yahoos. The story goes that at the home of David Filo, co-founder of Yahoo!, his father called David and Jerry “a pair of Yahoos” because of their restless nature, and they decided to use the name Yahoo! for their portal. In Swift's book, a Yahoo is a wild, filthy creature with unpleasant habits that resembles a human being all too closely. Other versions claim that Yahoo! is simply an acronym for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle”, which would translate as ‘Another officious hierarchical oracle’.
