VestaCP is an open-source control panel that lets you manage websites, email accounts, and databases, among other things. However, this panel has not been updated for a long time and could use some improvements.
To address this, a group of developers created a fork, updated many of the VestaCP packages, and introduced many new features, such as support for different PHP versions. This new project is called HestiaCP.
If you have any problems with VestaCP or need a specific HestiaCP feature, a very viable option is to create a new server with HestiaCP and migrate a VestaCP backup to HestiaCP.
Migrating a backup from VestaCP to HestiaCP
The first thing we need to do is create a new backup. Backups must be generated for each user, so we will log in with our user account and then go to the Respaldos or Backups:
Click the + symbol to create a new backup. The new backup will be ready in a matter of minutes—the time will depend on how much space your websites take up and how many websites you have under that user account.
Now we will connect to the VestaCP server via SSH using Putty and run the following commands to copy the backup we created to the new HestiaCP server:
# ssh root@[IP_SERVIDOR_HESTIACP] "mkdir -p /backup" 2> /dev/null
# scp /backup/admin.2020-09-18_05-10-06.tar root@[IP_SERVIDOR_HESTIACP]:/backup
Now we will connect to the HestiaCP server via SSH and run the following command to import the backup:
# v-restore-user admin admin.2020-09-18_10-00-06.tarWe must make sure that the name of backup.tar matches the name of the file we previously copied to the HestiaCP server.
Once the backup has been imported, we should see terminal output similar to this:
-- WEB --
2020-09-18 12:09:54 test.example.com
2020-09-18 12:09:54 miweb.com
-- DNS --
2020-09-18 12:09:54 test.example.com
-- MAIL --
2020-09-18 12:09:55 test.example.com
-- DB --
2020-09-18 12:09:55 admin_basesdedatos
2020-09-18 12:09:56 admin_default
2020-09-18 12:09:56 admin_wp
-- CRON --
2020-09-18 12:09:57 8 cron jobs
-- USER FILES --
2020-09-18 12:09:57 .sudo_as_admin_successful
2020-09-18 12:09:57 .bash_logout
2020-09-18 12:09:57 .bashrc
2020-09-18 12:09:57 .profile
2020-09-18 12:09:57 tmp
Our VestaCP user will now have been imported into our new HestiaCP server.
Important information to keep in mind
This migration only copies the content from one user to another with the same name. If you then want to change the username, you can use the v-change-domain-owner command to change one domain to another domain. This change only affects the website files; the database remains under the original user. To change the database owner, use the v-change-database-owner command (you will also need to update the websites' configuration files, as the user will change). FTP users will also stop working, so you must delete them with the v-delete-web-domain-ftp command and create them again.
