Chamilo LMS (Learning Management System) is open-source software that provides a virtual campus or a platform for delivering online training. It is an easy-to-use solution with an intuitive interface, low resource requirements, various teaching and administration tools, and an open-source distribution model based on collaborative development.
To install Chamilo, you can use the preinstalled HestiaCP image available in the Clouding customer panel, as it includes everything you need (Apache, MariaDB, and PHP) for a quick and easy installation. Select it and install Hestia CP on your server.
In this tutorial, we will use the hostname that Clouding assigns to our server by default. We will therefore access our HestiaCP panel using this hostname or the IP assigned to our server, together with port 8083.
Log in with the username admin and the password you will find in the Clouding panel (the same one assigned to root).
First, change the email address for the admin account. The default is admin@changeme.local, which is a nonexistent example address. Add your email address to avoid problems with Let's Encrypt and receive panel notifications.
Create a user in HestiaCP
Next, click Add User to create a new user that you will use to configure Chamilo. In this example, we will use the name usrchamilo and assign a password. Remember to save your changes by clicking Save.
Once the user has been created, switch to that account.
Add a domain in HestiaCP
Once you are in your new user account, click Add Web Domain and add the domain. In our case, we will use the hostname assigned by Clouding (if you use the hostname Clouding assigns by default, you must first delete it from the admin account, as it is initially assigned to that account).
Download Chamilo
Once you have created the domain, connect to your server via SSH and download the Chamilo installation file by running the following command:
# cd /tmp && wget https://github.com/chamilo/chamilo-lms/releases/download/v1.11.16/chamilo-1.11.16.zipUnzip it:
# unzip chamilo-1.11.16.zipNow move the files from the Chamilo folder to the public_html web directory for the user and domain you created in HestiaCP (replace the hostname with your domain or hostname, and replace the username as well if you created a user with a different name).
Move the Chamilo files:
# mv chamilo-1.11.16/* /home/usrchamilo/web/chamilo.ejemplo.com/public_htmlDelete the index.html file included by default in the HestiaCP installation:
# rm /home/usrchamilo/web/chamilo.ejemplo.com/public_html/index.htmlPermissions
Set the permissions by running these commands:
# chown -R usrchamilo:usrchamilo /home/usrchamilo/web/chamilo.ejemplo.com/public_html# chmod -R 755 /home/usrchamilo/web/chamilo.ejemplo.com/public_htmlCreate the database
Next, create the database for Chamilo. Log back in to your Hestia panel with your username, in our case usrchamilo and the password we assigned to it.
Go to the DB tab and enter a database name and password, along with a username. In our case, we chose the same name for both fields. Remember that HestiaCP automatically adds the username you previously created in Hestia as a prefix.
Your database name and username will therefore both be usrchamilo_chamilo.
Install Chamilo
Everything is now ready for you to access the automatic Chamilo installer.
Go to your domain or IP address and you should see the installer's welcome screen. If it does not appear, try clearing your cookies or opening an incognito tab.
Click Install Chamilo.
The language selection screen will appear. Select your language and click siguiente and then nueva instalación
Accept the license and fill in your details.
Fill in the details to establish the database connection correctly. Enter the same name and password you specified in the database configuration in HestiaCP.
In this case, we used the same name for the database and the user. The password in our case is Test1234.
The next form will show the login details for the Chamilo administration and configuration panel, so remember the password you assign to the admin user.
Finally, check that the username and password are the ones you want and proceed with the installation.
Revoke permissions
Once the installation is complete, the installer recommends changing the permissions for the configuration section and deleting the install folder. Do this via SSH.
# chmod -R 0555 /home/usrchamilo/web/d69cf2f6-0d20-439f-9c2f-5f229cce6179.clouding.host/public_html/app/config# rm -rf /home/usrchamilo/web/d69cf2f6-0d20-439f-9c2f-5f229cce6179.clouding.host/public_html/main/installFollow these steps to easily install Chamilo LMS on your server 😉 If you have any questions about this topic or your Clouding servers, email us at soporte@clouding.io We are always available to help with whatever you need!
