The lifecycle of a Windows OS is straightforward and clearly defined, with specific names and meanings based on dates or sequential version numbers.
1. Initial release
This is when the OS is officially released.
It is also known as RTM (Release to Manufacturing) when it is delivered to manufacturers. This marks the start of the official lifecycle.
For example: Windows Server 2019 was released in October 2018 (releases always come out a little before the year they refer to).
During this phase, updates are released frequently, initial bugs are fixed (any newly released OS tends to have more issues than an established one), and minor improvements and adjustments are introduced.
2. Mainstream support
This is the first long, stable support phase, usually lasting 5 years from release.
It includes:
- Security updates
- Bug fixes
- New features and improvements
- Design changes if the design becomes outdated (usually following desktop versions such as Windows 11...)
- Technical support
3. Extended support
The system remains active, continues to receive security updates, and can still be used without issues. However, it generally stays as it is at this point until the end of its life. This is essentially a maintenance phase: you should no longer expect anything new, only functionality updates.
Limited technical support remains available, and can be expanded for a fee.
4. End of life (EOL)
At this point, maintenance ends and the lifecycle is complete. You can continue using the system, but this is not recommended because it no longer receives updates, including security updates, and you have no support of any kind.
From this point on, more vulnerabilities in the OS are discovered as time passes.
5. Optional: ESU (Extended Security Updates)
In some cases, Microsoft offers an additional paid phase. This can be useful for systems with highly customized software that are difficult to migrate.
It only includes security patches and usually lasts around 3 years from the EOL phase.
