ISPConfig is a free, open-source control panel that lets you manage hosting easily. It is a good alternative to control panels such as Plesk or cPanel since those require payment.
You can install ISPConfig on Ubuntu versions from 20.04 to 16.04, as well as Debian versions from 11 to 8. This article explains how to install it on Ubuntu 20.04 and the commands for another version of Ubuntu or Debian.
Open a port in the firewall
To access the panel, you will need to open the port it uses, so you must open the following port in the server's firewall profile:
- TCP 8080
You can find more information in How to create a firewall rule.
Steps before installing ISPConfig
First, you will need to open the file /etc/hosts with an editor. Once it is open, for IP 127.0.1.1 you must enter the full name with the domain followed by the machine name. It is important that this be a record pointing to the IP, such as the one Clouding provides by default:
127.0.1.1 aef63db0-54cb-47fc-8133-f61569973d2e.clouding.host aef63db0-54cb-47fc-8133-f61569973d2e
93.189.93.136 ubuntu.repos.clouding.io
127.0.0.1 localhostThen switch to the file /etc/hostname and enter the machine name, in this example the clouding hostname aef63db0-54cb-47fc-8133-f61569973d2e.
Now you will need to restart the server to apply the changes, for example with reboot.
After restarting, update the directories with the command:
# apt update && apt upgrade -yInstalling ISPConfig
Once you have done the above, you only need to enter the command:
# wget -O - https://get.ispconfig.org | sh -s --If everything is correct, this message will appear, instructing you to type yes to proceed with the installation:
If everything went well, a final message will appear with the passwords for email, the ISPConfig panel, and the database. Another message will also appear notifying you that there is a temporary file containing the passwords included in the previous messages:
Basic ISPConfig configuration
Once this is done, you can access the control panel from a web browser at the following address:
Or by using the IP address:
To log in, you only need to enter the Username "admin" and the password from the previous message:
Once you are logged in, if you want a more secure password, go to “Tools” in the top menu and then click “Password and Language” in the menu on the left. There you can change the password and select Spanish as the language:
