The passwords we use are the last line of defense, and sometimes the only one, against unwanted access. This makes them a very important factor to consider when administering a server, an email account, etc.
Although it may seem like a simple task, several factors need to be considered to help you create strong passwords.
Things to include
We recommend including the following features in your password:
- At least 8 characters
- Uppercase and lowercase letters
- Numbers
- Punctuation marks
Things to avoid
- Personal information, such as dates and names
- Well-known acronyms
- Using the same password for everything
- Sequential passwords such as 12345, asdf, etc.
- Words found in a dictionary
- Passwords consisting of a single character type, such as all numbers, all lowercase letters, all uppercase letters, etc
Keep your password secret
- Never write your password on a piece of paper near your computer, especially if you work with other people
- Never give your password to anyone, not just as a matter of trust, but simply because you do not know whether their computer is secure
- Never store passwords in text files
- Change your password periodically
