There are many possible backup configurations for protecting our data against any type of attack or human error (especially the latter). Some people make a backup every two days, others every day, and others every 4 days. That is why, for some time now, at Clouding.io we have offered a very useful feature that lets you configure a server backup in 5 minutes. You can also use our panel to manage backups easily.
However, these full-server backups are sometimes not enough. You may also need to configure backups within the server to back up your web applications or other services separately. If you have a server administration panel such as Plesk or HestiaCP installed, you can configure website backups so that you can restore a specific website instead of the entire server.
Here, we will explain how to create backups using HestiaCP, which, despite being a simple panel, offers some very useful settings.
Configuring the number of backups to keep
To configure the number of backups, we need to change the setting under "Planes", but first we need to check which "Plan" is assigned to our user. To do this, click Usuario:
As shown in the image, we have the default plan, so we will go to Planes in the main menu at the very top and then edit the plan. In the plan editor, find the Respaldos parameter and enter the number of backups you want to keep.
Keep in mind that these backups are saved by default in /backups and that creating many backups of all your websites takes up disk space. You therefore need to consider the disk space available for creating the backup.
Exclusions
In the Respaldo section, you will see an option called "Exclusiones de respaldo". This option lets you exclude certain content from the daily backup. For example, you can exclude a website, an email account, a database, and so on.
To do this, simply enter the name of the service to exclude:
Restoring a backup
HestiaCP lets you restore individual services. For example, you can restore a specific user's email. You do not have to restore the entire website; you can restore individual items.
If you click a Respaldo, you can select which parts of the backup to restore or restore the entire backup:
This option displays a list of the backup's contents, allowing you to restore whatever you need:
