In this article, we show you how to install Docker on Windows. This process must be performed on Windows Server 2019, as it does not work on other versions of Windows. According to the official Docker documentation, this machine requires at least 4GB or 8GB of RAM.
We will use PowerShell for the installation, as the official Docker Desktop installer does not work on Windows Server versions.
Important Notice
"Docker only supports Docker Desktop on Windows for versions of Windows 10 that are still within Microsoft's servicing timeline".
This notice appears in the official Docker documentation, so we understand that Docker Desktop has stopped working after some updates, but we can still install it using PowerShell.
Installing Docker Desktop on Windows with PowerShell
Open a PowerShell console as an administrator and run the following:
Install-Module -Name DockerMsftProvider -Repository PSGallery -Force
Once DockerMsftProvider is installed, proceed to install Docker:
Install-Package -Name docker -ProviderName DockerMsftProvider
Once the installation is complete, restart the server.
Restart-Computer -ForceAfter restarting the server, verify that docker is installed correctly:
docker versionRunning Docker Containers on Windows
To deploy a Docker image, simply open a PowerShell or CMD console with administrator privileges and run the command needed to deploy the container. We tested this with the example container:
