Sometimes customers ask for a partition to create another drive, but partitioning the disk can have drawbacks. For example, you cannot extend the system partition without deleting the partitions at the end of the disk. You can therefore use the subst command in DOS, IBM OS/2, Microsoft Windows and ReactOS operating systems to substitute a path with a virtual drive on a physical or logical drive.
In Windows, you can create a virtual drive from a partition or path and assign it the letter you want simply by opening CMD with administrator privileges (it will appear as a physical drive, not a network drive).
For example, you can create a directory for the virtual drive:
mkdir C:\discoThen, with the following command, you can assign the letter D to the "disco" directory on drive C:
subst D: C:\discoTo remove the virtual drive, simply use the subst delete option and specify the drive to remove:
subst /D D:We hope this tutorial has helped. Have you tried it? Leave us your comments!
