You may often need to know how much disk space is used and what is using it so you can manage it on a Windows server. This article explains how to check disk space on a Windows server, starting with Windows File Explorer.
The second method uses an external program, specifically WinDirStat, which provides a clearer view of what is using space on your server.
View total and used space.
Go to Windows Search and enter "Este equipo", or "This PC" in English. The following option will appear in the search results:
Once there, you will see all your active drives (we recommend not partitioning the system disk). Under "Dispositivos y unidades", you will see the total disk space, in this case 25 GB, and the available space, in this case 11,5 GB:
Monitor and manage used space
To view disk space usage in more detail and manage it more efficiently (you may often have files in locations on the server that you are unaware of), you can use WinDirStat.
When you open the program, it will ask which drives you want to scan. Select the desired disk or all drives. This can be useful for specific partitions. In this case, the default option (All Local Drives) will only scan the local disk:
Once this is done, the information will appear as shown in the screenshot. On this screen, keep the following in mind: the lower section (with the colored blocks) shows which type of file occupies each area. Clicking a block takes you directly to the file occupying that space. This is the "treemap".
On the right side of the screen, you will see a legend showing which color corresponds to each file type: the extension list and the disk space used by each type.
On the left, you will see the partitions, that is, the directory list. You can view the total space by right-clicking the partition and selecting properties, or by pressing F6 directly. Here, you can view folders in order of how much space they occupy to see which directories account for most of the usage:
To hide the extension list and the "treemap" (the lower panel), press F8 and F9 respectively (you can also do this from the options tab).
