Resource Monitor is a tool built into the Windows operating system that provides a detailed view of system performance, particularly CPU, memory, disk and network usage. If you have ever wondered which processes are consuming resources on your computer or want to troubleshoot performance issues, Resource Monitor is a valuable tool that can help you obtain accurate, useful information. In this article, you will learn how to open and use Windows Resource Monitor to check your computer's performance.
How to open Resource Monitor
There are several ways to open Resource Monitor in Windows. The most common are listed below:
Method 1: Through Task Manager
Press Ctrl + Alt + End (from Remote Desktop) to open Task Manager. Alternatively, you can right-click the taskbar and select "Administrador de tareas" from the menu that appears.
Once Task Manager opens, click the "Rendimiento" tab.
At the bottom of the window, you will see a link labelled "Monitor de Recursos". Click it to open Resource Monitor.
Method 2: Through the Run menu
Press Win + R to open the "Ejecutar" dialog box.
Type "resmon.exe" in the text box and click "Aceptar" or press Enter.
Using Resource Monitor
Once you have opened Resource Monitor, you will see a window with several tabs, each providing specific information about system resources. Here is an overview of the most important tabs:
"Resumen del sistema" tab
This tab provides an overview of CPU, memory, disk and network usage in real time. It displays graphs and information about current system performance.
"CPU" tab
The "CPU" tab displays a detailed list of all processes currently using the CPU, along with their usage percentages. This allows you to quickly identify which processes are consuming the most CPU resources.
"Memoria" tab
In the "Memoria" tab, you can see how your system's RAM is being used. You can identify processes that are consuming large amounts of memory and determine whether any of them need to be closed or optimised.
"Disco" tab
The "Disco" tab shows which processes are accessing the hard disk and how this affects overall system performance. If you notice high disk usage, you can check which processes are causing the problem.
"Red" tab
The "Red" tab provides information about network traffic on your computer. If you suspect that a program is using too much bandwidth, this tab will help you identify it.
How to interpret the information
Resource Monitor provides valuable data for optimising your computer's performance. Here are some things to keep in mind when using this tool:
Sort by column: You can click the column headings in each tab to sort processes by CPU, memory, disk usage, etc. This allows you to quickly identify which processes are consuming the most resources.
Process analysis: If you find a process that consumes an excessive amount of resources and is not essential to system operation, you could consider closing it or checking for updates to the related software.
Performance history: Resource Monitor also allows you to access "Monitor de rendimiento", which displays historical graphs of system performance over time. This can be useful for detecting resource usage patterns at different times. Remember that you can also view usage history with the performance graphs in the Clouding panel.
